9th Grade Placement
One of the many decisions you will be making in getting your ninth grader in the best position to be successful at Lamar, is the selection of levels for freshmen classes.
Those students who have earned credit for Algebra 1 and/or both semesters of Spanish 1 in middle school will be able to apply the credit toward high school graduation. Another important issue, however, is whether the foundation in the course(s) is adequate to prepare your student for Algebra 2 and/or Spanish 2 on the more challenging PreDP/Advanced Academics level. Although Lamar offers academic courses in the Recommended and more challenging PreDP or IBDP levels, we encourage students to take the most difficult levels in which they can be successful.
The information and link that follows will help you assess if your student has mastered important concepts in Algebra 1 and Spanish 1 needed to be successful in the second course at the more challenging PreDP level. While there is no score we can simply offer to use as a cutoff for eligibility, consider the degree of ease or difficulty your student has with the assessment along with the percentage of incorrect answers when making your decision.
If your student passed both semesters of the class in middle school and does well on the assessment, placement in PreDP Algebra 2 and/or PreDP Spanish 2 should be appropriate. If you have concerns about your student’s skills in these important foundation courses, there are several options:
- Consider a summer program that reviews basic concepts that your student may have missed. Retaking the class in summer school will have both grades on the transcript and both contributing points towards GPA. Duplicate credit will not be awarded. Summer school classes at Lamar in these areas will be on the Recommended level.
- Move to the next course in sequence, but consider continuing math and/or Spanish at the Recommended level.
- For those who wish to continue courses in math and language in Advanced Academics, consider retaking the course at Lamar. Credit and grade point issues will be the same as for summer school. This is reserved for those students who are clearly not ready for the next course in sequence. Summer school programs in PreDP Geometry and PreDP Precalulus should be available at Lamar to advance your student’s math so that by senior year, Calculus or math for the IB diploma will be attainable.

ALGEBRA 1
The end of course assessment for Algebra is a good predictor of mastery of Algebra 1 concepts. Click on this link below to take your own assessment of your Algebra 1 skills. Omit questions 7, 9, 21, 22, 23, 24, 37, 42, and 53 as those are not topics included in our Algebra 1 class.
